My husband is a runner. Like… a -buys-special-running-shoes and tracks-his-yearly-miles-on-an- app kind of runner. He also lifts weights almost daily and watches his diet rigorously. As a result he’s fit and beautiful and I kind of hate him.
I’m super jealous that he’s found exercise he enjoys and is to the point where he 1. doesn’t feel like he’s dying after 2 minutes of cardio and 2. actually sees the results of his hard work.
But running definitely isn’t my jam.
What is my jam and is quickly becoming one of my favorite things? YOGA.
I’ve always been a relatively flexible person. I took a yoga and pilates class in college and truly fell in love. It’s a wonderful way to get some exercise in without getting my heart racing a 101843 miles an hour or having to go workout in public. It’s also just hard enough to please my little competitive heart. Add a good yoga session with some meditation and it’s one of my favorite ways to start or end the day!
I am NOT one of those yoga gurus who knows every pose name and can do everything with ease. In fact, as I’m writing this piece, I’ll I admit I don’t do yoga nearly as much as I’d like. But I firmly believe it’s a necessary part of my journey and something I’ve PROMISED myself to prioritize.
The first thing I write in the Goals section of my Start Today journal every morning: I practiced yoga daily for one year. 12/3/18 - 12/3/19 IT'S ON.
New to yoga? Here are some of my favorites to get you started:
Mat - you NEED a good yoga mat. Not only are they pretty (and who doesn’t love pretty things?) they keep you from busting your face.
YOGA PANTS - not going to lie…. it’s my favorite part about doing yoga. Fabletics has my favorites! Fun prints, sturdy material, perfect for twisting myself into a human pretzel. You can score some great deals and get recommendations tailored to your specific physical activity and preference. If you’re interested in checking them out, see here.
Downdog - When I first started planning on working out, I was super self conscious about doing it around others. I don’t like going to the gym and even refused to workout around my husband. I’d be so worried about how out of shape I was that I couldn’t enjoy the workout. I am also a working Mama who didn’t want to give up time that I could be spending with my family to trek across town and back to hit the gym. The Downdog app has been an answer to my woes! You can customize your routine by practice, duration, skill level, background music, instructor, and so much more. I started by doing 25 minute sessions every morning, and sometimes evening, and working my way up! Whether you are brand new to the practice or have been practicing for a while, it’s a great at home workout option.
Pinterest - check out my yoga board! You can find tons of poses and yoga information on the Pinterest. It’s my go-to if I’m feeling stuck or need inspiration for my yoga flow.
