Work/Life Balance B.S.

I’m so, so tired of hearing the term “work/life balance”. The word BALANCE brings to mind this visual of a sliding scale to where we spend exactly half of our life dealing with work and the other half just living. And if your scale isn’t perfectly balanced, you’re somehow lacking or not doing it right.

But I have NEVER had a point in my life where the amount of time I spend working and living are equal. In fact, I don’t know a single person who is “perfectly balanced”.

It’s bullshit.

There is no work/life balance. I think of it more like work/life juggle. We’re all juggling the different tasks we have to get done at work and at home. If we’re good we also throw things like medical check-ups, exercise, self-care, etc., into the juggling mix for a time. Occasionally vacations and date nights might make an appearance. But we can only juggle so many things at once. And those things we juggle and spend all of our time, energy, and attention on to keep from falling change constantly.

There are some weeks were all of my focus and the things I juggle revolve around my job. When I get home, I barely have the energy or time to eat, bathe, and pick-up a little bit. Those good habits and things to do in my ‘spare time’ are almost non-existent.

On the flip side, there are weeks where I have a solid amount of work but still make time for exercise, reading, hanging out with my husband and kid, soccer games, and all of the other fun things. When the things I do outside of my 8-5 are WAY more important than what I accomplish during the 40-hour work week.

There is no balance in my life. None. It’s me constantly looking at the things I’m juggling and determining whether or not they’re worth my energy to keep them from getting tossed aside.

I’ve stopped using the term work/life balance because I feel like it’s setting me up for failure. If I feel like my day-to-day is leaning more towards work for the week or maybe more towards life, I feel like I’m doing something wrong.

If you feel the same, make a change! Start thinking about the things you're juggling and what you can do to lighten your load. Is everything in the air really worth your time, energy, and attention? Can something be let go? Does something need to be added?

Figure out what’s going to have you Seeing 20:20 by 2020 and make it happen!
